June 10, 2024
The energy is electric!
You’ve snagged tickets to see your favorite artist live or witness your team battle it out on the field. The anticipation builds as you’re fueling up the car to hit the road for the opening act, when suddenly you wind up stuck in traffic.Â
If you’re planning to drive to your event, it’s important to stay safe and responsible. Traffic for big events can get bumper-to-bumper, and the last thing you want is to turn down the excitement by
getting into a traffic jam or an accident. Not to worry, our HiRoad team has the scoop. We’ll share some essential safe driving tips for events to help make sure you arrive on time, relaxed and ready to enjoy the event.
Planning for a safe drive
One of the more mindful things you can do before hitting the road is to plan ahead. A day or two before the occasion, here’s what you’ll want to look into planning:
Directions and parking is a great place to start when planning your special occasion. Take some time and visit the event website for any direction or parking directions. If you can’t find any, use a navigation app to make a plan on how you’ll get there and where you’ll park.
Event timing is everything. As it gets closer to kick off, you can expect traffic to spike and make it more difficult to arrive on time. A good rule of thumb is to leave an hour or two before the start time of your experience.
Weather conditions can make or break a concert or sports game, especially if you’re unprepared. In your prep, take a look at the weather and plan ahead for any unexpected conditions—whether that’s sunblock for sunshine or an umbrella for rain.
With all of that prep in mind, make sure your car is ready to go with a topped off fuel tank, washer fluid, working lights, full tires and a packed emergency kit.
Navigating crowds and cars at the event
Beyond running into cars on the road, you may likely encounter pedestrians and lots of them on your way to find a parking place. As important as it is to stay mindful of other cars on the road, it’s just as important to watch for folks walking or using micromobility (e-bikes, scooters).
One of the biggest safety tips we have is to stay distraction-free while driving. Focus on the task of driving safely by putting your phone on Do Not Disturb and in a cradle, lowering the volume of your favorite playlist and waiting to eat until you arrive and park your car.
Be patient as you navigate roads with people by allowing folks to cross the street safely or allowing other cars to merge into traffic. Try to stay mindful in parking lots by lowering your speed and observing cautiously for children or folks who may walk into the line of traffic.Â
With these helpful safety tips in mind, you can make everyone’s experience to and from the event a safe one.
More safety tips to keep in mind
As we wrap up, we want to make sure your concert, farmer’s market or sports event goes off without a hitch. After parking your car, make sure any valuables you may have inside are safely out of view or taken with you, and secure your vehicle by rolling up the windows and locking the doors.
If you do experience an accident, theft or vehicle damage, it’s never a bad idea to have your car insurance info on hand. Many car insurance companies (like HiRoad) now offer digital experiences, and most customers can easily access their policies on their mobile devices.
Enjoying your favorite artist or team can be easily achieved with a little preparation and mindfulness as you hit the road. To help make sure you have coverage for those what-if moments on the road, take some time to review your coverages and see what is and isn’t covered in the event of an accident or damage to your vehicle.Â
