There you are, sitting in shock. The other driver was in a hurry to make their ukulele lesson, so they rolled that stop sign, and bam!
They clipped the right side of your car. Nobody was hurt, but there is glass and broken headlights everywhere. You’ve had a car crash. Now what?
I’m Ryan, a Claims Specialist here at HiRoad®. I know that one of the worst parts of a car crash is not knowing what to do afterward. So we wanted to offer four key things to help you feel prepared, expedite the process, and get you back on the road soon.
1. Get to a safe spot and assess the damage. Right after a car crash, your adrenaline will be pumping. Take some slow, deep breaths to gather yourself. Then, take a minute to check if you, your passengers, or anyone else was injured. If you’re alright and you can still drive your car, pull over. Once in a safe area, you can get out of your car to take a look at the damage. If you’re hurt in any way, or can’t get through traffic, stay where you are until help arrives.
Claims tip: take photos right away, of your car and any others involved. This is helpful for us to figure out who was at fault and what repairs will be necessary.
2. Call 911 if the accident is serious. If anyone is injured, be sure to call 911 immediately. Sometimes nobody’s hurt, but we recommend you notify the police just in case.
3. Gather as much info as possible. The most convenient way may be storing text or audio notes on your phone, which you can then email to us. Whether police are at the scene or not, the first thing to do is snap a photo of the other vehicle’s license plate. Next, you’ll want to exchange information with the other drivers involved, including their name, license number, insurance company and policy number, and type of car.
